Columbia River Gorge: Tropical Northwest | Portland Film Photographer
INSPIRATION
We were privileged to visit Hawaii while Jess' parents lived there for 2 1/2 years. Our favorite moments were spent hiking through thick jungles to find waterfalls. We trekked over large entangled roots, walked under hanging vines, leaped rocks to cross the rivers, and climbed boulders. We are blessed to have similar features in our own back yard here in Portland, Oregon. We wanted to include elements from Hawaii's rainforest to incorporate them into our Northwest environment. Inspired by the islands....we produced a “TROPICAL NORTHWEST STYLED SHOOT”.
SHOOT STYLE
We wanted to include various ranges of green, contrasted with white, and some blue splashes to compliment the color scheme. Additionally, we wanted to have lush green floral arrangements with subtle tropical accents. Susanna, the florist designer from Pistils & Stamen was able to turn our concept into a reality. It was important to have a good balance of tropical rainforest elements against our northwest rainforest environment. We love elegance and simplicity, but we did want to add a little bit of edge and color pop.

SHOOT PREPARATION
We had some amazing people contribute to this styled wedding shoot. We wanted to work with wedding vendors who shared a similar style. Those companies included; Vintage Mingle, Pistils & Stamen, Vitreluxe, and Rosy Cakes Bakery. The wedding dress was designed by Lena Medoyeff and Sarahi Welton from Pure Elegance styled our model's hair and makeup. All of the wedding vendors were great to work with. Thank you to every single one of you! Credits are listed below.
details
This past summer, we spent most of our time exploring the Columbia River Gorge. We knew that the Gorge would be a perfect location for our editorial wedding shoot. Since Hood River, Oregon is one of our favorite places, we wanted to find a place in that area to shoot wedding preps. Using our resources, we found an amazing home on Airbnb that was located in White Salmon, Washington which is just a short drive across the Hood River bridge. We held the wedding ceremony at Horsetail Falls, a pretty 40 minute drive from Portland.
SHOOTING STYLE
We love fine art film photography, it is our favorite medium to shoot in. Film helps us to see, feel, value, and appreciate every shot that we take. Film photography helps us connect and engage with the practice in a way that digital photography cannot. Jess and her trusty Contax 645 captured these images and our local lab, PhotoVision provided the scans.
WEDDING FILM
In addition to photography, we wanted to film the concept so we could produce a cinematic wedding film. Race has been a contract wedding cinematographer in the Portland wedding industry for the last few years. He is extremely grateful for the experience he's gained and the ability to hone his skills with the wedding videography companies that he's worked with. This styled shoot gave us an opportunity to showcase our own wedding cinematography style.
FINE ART FILM GALLERY
All of the images below were taken with a Contax 645 with Kodak Portra film. We have all of our film rolls sent into Northwest's premiere film lab for processing. PhotoVision is located in Salem, Oregon and they do a fantastic job!
